When to visit an accident and emergency department

Accident and emergency departments provide walk-in access to medical care 24 hours a day, every day. You do not need an appointment. If you go to an accident and emergency department and it’s not an emergency then you may have to wait a long time to be seen. Accident and emergency departments must treat the sickest people first, including those suffering from:A and E doctor icon

  • a suspected heart attack or stroke
  • heavy blood loss
  • severe allergic reactions
  • suspected broken bones
  • severe burns or scalds
  • deep wounds

  • breathing difficulties
  • choking
  • seizures (fits)

If you have a minor injury or issue which needs medical attention the same day but isn’t life-threatening, you can visit an urgent care centre or a minor injuries unit (links). If you’re not sure what to do call 111 or visit the website 111.nhs.uk for medical advice, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you do have a genuine emergency you can find your nearest A&E below.
