Rates of weight loss (bariatric) surgery fell across West Yorkshire during the Covid-19 pandemic when hospitals focused on surgeries that were more clinically urgent. More patients are starting to receive treatment again.
The West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts is working to make sure that people who have been waiting for the longest times are offered the opportunity to have their surgery at an alternative hospital if they wish. This will speed up their access to surgery.
All places (Bradford District and Craven, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield District) and care providers in West Yorkshire are working together to review obesity and bariatric surgery commissioning policies and processes to ensure that we're providing care in the best and most efficient way possible. This way, we can make the most of the resources we have and offer treatment to more people who need it.
