April 2023
I am a Bradford GP trainee and population health fellow in West Yorkshire. My fellowship has been an exciting time involving working closely with two linked projects. The first being part of a joint Universal Healthcare initiative with London South Bank University looking at evaluating and re-framing the landscape of health inequalities.
I am also working closely with population health specialists, public health teams and clinicians, to develop a training day around weight management referrals and more specifically developing and implementing a more compassionate approach to talking about weight. This includes upskilling healthcare professionals when it comes to:
- talking about weight with confidence and up to date knowledge
- ensuring we take a compassionate and trauma-informed approach, as well as considering how this impacts on day-to-day mental health
- robust understanding of the referral pathways and what interventions are in place for each service
My main passion is for reducing health inequalities, particularly in the South Asian community. So far, my fellowship has been invaluable in giving me the tools and knowledge for understanding these issues further and implementing tangible change.
