The NHS Long Term Plan makes a renewed commitment to improve and widen access to care for people needing mental health support.
Aligned to this commitment, one of our Big Ambitions as a Partnership is to reduce the gap in life expectancy between people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and/or autism and the rest of the population. Everything that our providers do contributes to this ambition, but so does the wider society we live in; strong family and friendship connections, good quality employment and safe, healthy accommodation are vital.
What we will do:
- Transform mental health care so more people can access treatment, sooner
- Make it easier and quicker for people of all ages to receive mental health crisis care, around the clock, 365 days a year
- Expand specialist mental health care for mothers during and following pregnancy
- Continue to develop services in the community and hospitals, including talking therapies and mental health liaison teams, to provide the right level of care for hundreds of thousands more people with common or severe mental illnesses.
Gender Identity services
Adult Gender Identity Services are being reviewed by NHS England. There are very long waiting times for accessing this service and these will increase as more young people are transferred into adult services.
In West Yorkshire, there is an adult service provided by Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust.

We've launched a new campaign to create awareness around male suicide across West Yorkshire and are urging everyone to get involved. The campaign aims to promote a wellbeing culture by normalising conversation around suicide and mental health as well as providing communication assets, links to credible sources such as the life-saving Zero Suicide Alliance training, and signposting to local support.
