Smokers in West Yorkshire encouraged to give quitting another go

Posted on: 9 March 2022

It is estimated that smoking kills around 100,000 people across the UK each yearWednesday 9 March 2022 marked No Smoking Day where we encouraged smokers in West Yorkshire to give quitting another go. New YouGov data commissioned by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) reveals that more than two in every 5 (42%) smokers expect to get advice about quitting when visiting their GP about a non-smoking related matter. By informing patients of the risks of smoking and the best ways to quit it can often help prevent them developing serious complications and smoking related illnesses.

new smoking cessation referral from hospital to community pharmacy also launched across the country on 10 March. This new service sees hospitals and community pharmacy teams working together to provide continuation of support to people who want to stop smoking.

We also reaffirmed our commitment to help smokers stop by signing the NHS Smokefree pledge now registered on the Smokefree Action Coalition website. This is a set of commitments endorsed by national health and public health leaders and signed by local leaders to show commitment to securing a smokefree country by 2030.
