Colleagues from our Targeted Prevention team joined other healthcare professionals working in tobacco prevention at a regional NHS tobacco dependency treatment service event on 7 September in York. The event provided the opportunity to celebrate progress to date of tobacco dependency treatment services across the North East and Yorkshire.
Providers, trusts and integrated care boards, including West Yorkshire, shared best practice initiatives happening across the three pathways - maternity, acute inpatient and mental health inpatient services. Matt Fagg, Director of Prevention and Long Term Conditions at NHSE set the national context and attendees joined conversations around embedding tobacco dependency services into routine practice as part of the wider system approach.
Kate Heighway from Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust presented on the day giving an overview of the maternity in-house service and some of the fantastic work taking place. That has included achieving a rate of 6.8% smoking at time of delivery - down 3.79% since the service started last year. The current figure is 8% for West Yorkshire.
