The NHS is reminding people in West Yorkshire that there is one month remaining for those eligible to get their COVID spring vaccination. Anyone aged five and over who still needs a first or second dose can also get them during this time and after 30 June, first and second vaccinations will only be available for those at increased risk and during seasonal campaigns.
Just over a quarter of a million people in West Yorkshire are eligible for a spring COVID jab, which is being offered to those aged 75 and over, people aged 5 and over who have a weakened immune system and older adult care home residents. This latest vaccination is being offered following advice from the Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation.
As at 31 May, nearly 132,000 people across West Yorkshire have had their spring COVID jab, though many more have already booked their appointments over the next month.
Dr James Thomas, GP and Medical Director for the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said:
"Our protection against COVID, from the vaccines or having had the virus, decreases over time so it’s especially important for some people to top up their defences. We may be learning to live with COVID, but it is still a serious threat which is continuing to cause severe illness and hospitalisation for thousands of people every week.
“If you are over 75 or you have a weakened immune system, please book your COVID spring vaccination so you can enjoy the summer with the peace of mind that you’ve got the extra protection that you need.”
Up until 30 June 2023 anyone aged five or over can still get their first or second COVID vaccinations. After 30 June, first and second doses will only be available to those at increased risk and these will only be offered during seasonal campaigns.
Dr Thomas said: “Getting your COVID vaccinations is the best way to ensure you are protected against the virus. COVID-19 is still with us and can cause serious illness. Anyone who contracts COVID is at risk of becoming unwell, especially those with existing health conditions, and having a COVID vaccination will increase your protection. We are urging everyone to have the jabs they need – whether that is the spring vaccination or the first and second doses – before 30 June.”
Anyone who believes they should be eligible for a vaccine but does not get invited can check online, or people can use the National Booking Service and then speak to a clinician on site. COVID vaccinations can be booked online, via the NHS App or by calling 119.
Dr Thomas concluded: “It’s quick and easy to get a COVID vaccination and it will make sure you are as protected as possible for the months ahead. Protect yourself and those around you and book your vaccinations before the end of June.”
