This Islamophobia Awareness Month, it is crucial to shine a spotlight on an issue that continues to affect millions of individuals around the world. Islamophobia, the irrational fear or hatred of Islam and Muslims, has far-reaching consequences on both a personal and societal level. In the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable landscape of social media, influencers wield a considerable impact on shaping opinions and fostering conversations. Unfortunately, this influential position can come with its challenges, including encountering Islamophobic comments. In this blog, I share my story as a Muslim woman on social media facing Islamophobia.
The Roots of Islamophobia
Islamophobia often stems from a complex interplay of historical, cultural, and geopolitical factors. Misunderstandings about Islam, fuelled by negative media portrayals and political agendas, contribute to the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes. Additionally, acts of terrorism carried out by extremist groups can lead to the unjust conflation of the actions of a few with the beliefs of an entire religious community.
Social Media (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook)
I am commonly known as Mummillion chosen for me by my daughter. Her Instagram handle is: Lookamillion, this was born out of the love for makeup and skincare, being a makeup artist, she wants people to feel a million dollars after having their makeup done.
My social media account on Instagram was set up around 2013 due to my daughter facing horrendous online abuse, at this point I never saw many people representative of me. I was about to myself embark on a journey of racism, hateful comments, bullying and harassment, whilst trying to protect my daughter. Being told to get out of this country has me baffled to this day. This is probably the most hurtful comment I have heard due to it being said by many people. By combatting these comments with kindness’, I hope I am promoting empathy and understanding for people who have negative views.
I use my social media as an educating platform where I can showcase my life as a Muslim Woman and celebrate the richness and diversity which comes with that. I often talk about topics which affect many members of my community and support others. My culture involves cooking and sharing food with others and this is one of the things I celebrate. I have built alliances with other social media influencers or content creators who share my commitment to promote inclusivity and understanding. I am always seeking opportunities to collaborate with other influencers to challenge stereo types and celebrates diversity.
My advice to anyone on any social media platform when confronting negative comments, prioritise your mental health. Social media can be emotionally draining, surround yourself with positive and understanding communities.
Finally, as a social media influencer, facing Islamophobic comments has been a challenging aspect of my online presence. However, by staying informed, setting boundaries, engaging constructively, and amplifying positive voices, I have contributed to fostering a more inclusive and tolerant digital environment. My influence goes beyond numbers; it shapes perspectives and can be a powerful force for positive change.
