Antibiotic awareness week (18-24 November)

Posted on: 11 November 2022

Next week marks the start of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November).

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to health, and it’s estimated that antibiotic resistant superbugs will kill more than cancer by 2050.

That’s why reducing antibiotic use and antibiotic resistant infections is one of the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership’s ten big ambitions. We’re working with partners across West Yorkshire to tackle this global problem at a local level - but we need the support of all who live and work here to achieve that goal.

To help do that, we’d encourage all healthcare professionals to become antibiotic guardians - choose one simple pledge about how you’ll make better use of antibiotics and help save these vital medicines from becoming obsolete at https://antibioticguardian.com/

To further help tackle AMR, colleagues in Leeds have developed a campaign, Seriously Resistant, that aims to help raise awareness of the issues and educate people about what they can do to make a difference. The campaign resources are now available to use across West Yorkshire, and they include a number of assets for primary care, including posters, leaflets, digital screen displays and social media. To find out more, please visit seriouslyresistant.com/join-the-movement/healthcare-professionals/

NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board have also produced a short video about the importance of preventing infection, and helping people need fewer antibiotics - https://youtu.be/XaSCJvYk23s - please watch and share it.

This is the first in a series of four created by Dr Vinesh Patel, Microbiology SpR Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust and Population Health Fellow at NHS West Yorkshire ICB, in collaboration with Dr Mamoon Al-Deyab and Dr Gillian Hawksworth (University of Huddersfield) and Dr Mina Bakhit, Bond University, Australia.  The other films will cover hydration to prevent UTIs, caring for people with urinary incontinence and living with a urinary catheter – we’ll share details when they’re available.
