West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership has been awarded an additional 250 places on the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme (T2DR) for the current financial year, bringing our total to 750 places for years one and two. This increase follows the successful uptake of the programme in West Yorkshire since it launched in February 2024, with 707 patients referred by local GP practices and 378 patients already on the programme.
The T2DR Programme is a joint initiative between NHS England and Diabetes UK, providing a low calorie, total diet replacement treatment for people who are living with type 2 diabetes and obesity or overweight. With these additional places, we can continue supporting more people in West Yorkshire to take steps toward managing and, in some cases, putting their type 2 diabetes into remission.
NHSE North East and Yorkshire Regional Diabetes Clinical Lead and West Yorkshire ICB Diabetes Clinical Lead, Dr Waqas Tahir, said: “The additional places awarded to our programme are a testament to its success and the positive impact it has had on our patients. This achievement is thanks to the dedication of our GP practices in making referrals. We are committed to helping more people in West Yorkshire manage their diabetes, achieve diabetes remission and improve their overall health and wellbeing.”
Participants follow a low-calorie, total diet replacement treatment for 12 weeks, including soups and shakes of 800 - 900 calories daily. Alongside this, participants receive support and monitoring for 12 months including help to re-introduce food after the initial 12-week period. Sessions are delivered via one-to-one sessions - either digitally or face-to-face.
Based on research, participants lost over 10kg on average, improved their blood sugar levels, reduced diabetes-related medication, and nearly half achieved type 2 diabetes remission.
Angela Forsey of Halifax said: “I have lived with type 2 diabetes for five years and was thrilled that The Boulevard Medical Practice has given me the opportunity to be referred to the NHS Type 2 Path to Remission Programme. It’s not always easy, but the programme is simple to follow and it works! I started on the 18 October, and in less than three week lost one inch off my stomach, three pounds and now fit into clothes that are one size smaller. My goal is to beat type 2 and achieve remission”.
The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme will not be suitable for everyone and there are some eligibility requirements that people must meet to be involved. For more information see the NHS T2DR website pages.
