Racial Inequalities Training
Our Partnership continues to raise the profile of its diverse workforce.
During Black History Month in October 2020, a workshop was hosted with our leaders to help educate and raise awareness, build change within our programmes and devise an action plan for change. Ethnic minority voices in our communities and in our Race Equality Network (formerly known as the BAME Network) led the development of this workshop from the start, supported by our dedicated System Leadership and Development colleagues.
Topics covered included areas such as unconscious bias and racial micro-aggression which helps employees learn how their individual behaviour is influenced by their own blind spots and stereotypes, along with how we can build Allyship within our own organisations.
Race Equality Network
Our workforce is more diverse than it has been any other time previously. Unfortunately, across some levels of our organisations, particularly in leadership positions, our workforce does not reflect the ethnic diversity of our population. There is considerable evidence which suggests tackling workforce race and equality would improve staff experience, organisational efficiency and - most importantly - improve outcomes for the people using our health and care services. Furthermore, it is important that our staff should be able to look at the leadership and see themselves represented.
The Race Equality Network is now a formal part of our infrastructure, with real influence and purpose, including a role in the implementation of the core offer for all staff, the Partnership, NHS People Plan and the Leadership Compact across the system. This section of our website includes information about the network, including latest news and updates, member profiles and how to get involved.

The Fellowship Programme
In March 2020, the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Partnership Board approved recommendations from the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Race Equality Network in the following key areas and formalised the Network as an oversight group.
- Talent, retention and culture
- Influence
- Recruitment, selection and succession planning
- Measurement and impact
Full paper: Achieving our ambition to increase the diversity of our leadership
Following these recommendations, the Network and the West Yorkshire and Harrogate System Leadership and Development Programme developed a leadership development programme focused on ethnic minorities. This new programme builds on existing good practice and complements existing local and regional programmes to make sure that we have adequate representation of ethnic minority colleagues in our next generation of leaders.
The fellowship is made up of three leadership development streams to enable participants at different stages within their careers to progress to the next stage. It is open to our entire workforce from all job sectors. This includes local authorities, social care, the voluntary and community sector and the NHS (clinical and non-clinical) for those who are looking to develop into senior system leaders and directors.
