“I used to think the word ‘Hospice’ was scary, but this is the opposite. You come here to live and have quality of life.”
The West Yorkshire and Harrogate Hospice Collaborative
All of the hospices delivering services across West Yorkshire and Harrogate work together within our Integrated Care System. Our hospices are using their influence, experience and expertise to improve palliative and end of life care services for everyone in the area.
What do our hospices do?
Our hospices support thousands of people together with their families each year. Services are wide ranging and include much more than you might think. They offer palliative and end of life care, respite breaks, symptom control, pain and medicines management, carer support, family support, bereavement support, counselling and many other services which are often available in the hospice, in the community and at home. Hospices have the expertise to support and manage a very wide range of conditions and so services are not limited to people with cancer. Our hospices are also able to provide expert advice to health professionals including education and training.
Who can benefit from hospice services?
Hospice services are available to everyone, are free, inclusive, non-denominational and holistic. Hospices consider all the needs (clinical, practical, emotional and spiritual) of the person they are helping, together with the wider needs of those closest to them. Hospices do this so that people can lead their best lives and be supported to have the death they want in their place of choice.
How are our hospices run?
Our hospices are charities and as such need to generate most of the income they spend on these services themselves. Hospices in our region need to generate over £60m a year to run the services. Our hospices rely on volunteers to support staff and work with around 4 volunteers for every paid member of staff.
Hospices are regulated by The Care Quality Commission in the same way that all of our NHS services are. All of our hospices have at least a “Good” rating and 2 are rated as “Outstanding.”
"When our daughter Nahla stayed at the hospice for overnight care, me and my husband were able to spend an evening together, just the two of us, for the first time in more than 8 years."
What did our hospices do during the pandemic?
During the pandemic, our hospices provided a wide range of additional support to our colleagues in the NHS, caring for many more people, preventing admissions to our hospitals, supporting discharge from hospitals, supporting people in care homes, supporting families who were shielding, running our grief and loss line (in partnership) and loaning out staff to the vaccination program.
